This is a compilation video I put together. The song is called “We Can Make It” by Aquarious, featuring samples from the song “MacArthur Park” by Donna Summer.

Donna Summer is my favorite disco diva of all time. I saw her perform back in 1995 at the Caesar’s Palace Casino in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. She was awesome. My favorite Donna Summer songs are “MacArthur Park” and the Club 69 Future Mix version of “I Will Go With You (Con Te Partiro)”

The music video contains a lot of funny moments from our previous music videos. You will see that all four of us like to imitate and make fun of our signature dance moves.

Flashback: The A*Teens Mega Mix February 14, 2006

Here is another flashback video. The song is The A-Teens Mega Mix which includes the songs Dancing Queen, Super Trooper, Gimme Gimme Gimme, S.O.S., Voulez Vous, Take A Chance on Me, and Mamma Mia. I made this video back in June 2001 at my mom’s house.

I love the A*Teens. They are one of my favorite groups. I also love Abba. But I think the A*Teens versions of the old Abba songs are much better than the original Abba songs or the remixed Abba songs. My favorite A*Teens song is Mamma Mia.

Speaking of Mamma Mia, I also love the musical Mamma Mia. I have seen it twice in San Francisco and once here in Sacramento. It is my favorite musical ever.

You will notice in the music video all the new Old Navy tank tops I bought a week before the video shoot. I was able to shoot the entire video once and still managed to have seven different costumes.

Enjoy!

Pinoy Ako: Director’s Commentary February 12, 2006

With two of the four Mischievious Boys having Filipino heritage, it is expected that we do a music video of a Filipino song. However, this proved to be a difficult task even from the very beginning. I received numerous email messages from our viewers to do a Filipino song. As a Filipino residing in the United States, I have little knowledge of popular music in the Philippines. Thus, I asked many Filipino viewers for suggestions. To my surprise, almost all of them mentioned one specific song -“Pinoy Ako” by Orange and Lemons.

This song is a smash hit in the Philippines and is the theme song of a top-rated reallity show, “Pinoy Big Brother.” Also, as it turned out, the song was also associated with the recently-concluded Southeast Asian Games, held in the Philippines, in which Fiipinos took home the most number of medals. Clearly, with its patriotic message, “Pinoy Ako” mania swept the country.

Song selection is important. I liked the song from the first time I listened to it. However, I was unsure how it would fit the style of the Mischievious Boys. The original version of the song has a good beat, but it has more a folk-rock feel to it. We usually do club/techno/dance music. Thanks to Joseph and his technical talents for creating the Mischievious Boys mix of the song. Joseph did three mixes. The third one was the best one, as it incorporated the slow part in the beginning and the end of the original version with upbeat dance beat in the middle.

Now, that we have the song, the next job is to come up with a concept for the vdieo. This proved to be another daunting task. After surfing YouTube.com, I learned that hundreds of amateur videos have been made of this song. A couple feature famous Filipinos from all over the world. Some videos show different scenaries and landscapes in the Philippines. And an overwhelming majority are home-videos of the signature dance of this song.

If we really want to make our music video to stand out, we got to be creative and different. We got to think outside the box. At the same time, I want the video to introduce our viewers to the Filpino culture. After a couple of sleepness nigths (ok not really), the main concept was born – “Dancing with the Stars” meets “American Idol.” Those two shows are currently very popular in the U.S. Doing a parody seems to be a great idea. Also, Filipinos love ballroom dancing. If you attend any Filipino gathering, there will surely be a dancefloor. A celebrattion would not be complete without the cha cha. Hahahha.

We also wanted the video to bring the viewers to the Philippines (well, not litreally, but figuratively). Joseph suggested that we included known Filipino landscapes. The background of the second chorus is the famous monument of the Filipino national hero, Jose P. Rizal. Also, it was a great addition to include The Jeepney, a public transportation in the Philippines. It is the colorful, funky-looking vehicle at the end of the second verse with Joseph, Tommy, and myself. Thanks, Joseph, for the idea.

Perhaps, what makes this video exceptional is that it trulty captures one of the deeply-held values of the Filipino culture – pride and love for one’s family. We are so honored that Mischievious Grandma Cristina graced us with her presence in the video. If you are an avid fan of The Mischievious Boys, you would know the role Grandma Cristina in the making of the MBs. She named our boy band.

Ok, now back to the video. “Pinoy Ako” is the biggest production we have so far. The filming took about two and a half hours, including the practicing and costume changes. Joseph and I did several dance steps such as the Electric Slide, Macarena, Cha-cha, Tahitian, Hawaiian, Waltz, and Tango. I messed up more than twice, but it is ok since we are not professional dancers. Plus, it would make the video funnier. There are several outtakes.

Overall, I am proud of this music video. I hope you all enjoyed my directorial debut. This has been a great experience, as always!

Maraming Salamat Po (Thank You)

– Edward

New Video – “Pinoy Ako” (The Mischievious Boys Mix) by Orange and Lemons February 10, 2006

The Mischievious Boys finally did a music video in Tagalog (the Filipino language). The song is called “Pinoy Ako” by Orange and Lemons. I remixed the original Orange and Lemons song into a more upbeat dance mix.

Click on the YouTube image above to play the letterboxed music video on your web browser (requires Flash Player). Or subscribe to our video podcast to get the high resolution widescreen version. You can also click on the images below to watch the high resolution widescreen version on your browser (requires Apple QuickTime Player). Or right-click the images below and then choose “Save Target As” to save the music video in your computer.

The music video stars Edward and Joseph, with a very special appearance by Tommy. This music video also introduces Cristina to the world as The Mischievious Grandma. She is the number one Mischievious Fan. She was very proud to appear in this music video.

“Pinoy Ako” is the theme song to the hit television show “Pinoy Big Brother”. The song is also a very big hit in the Philippines. The title of the song translates to “I am Filipino” in English.

This music video is definitely our biggest production yet. I have spent several nights remixing the song. My third version is the one I used in the music video. My remix is definitely much better than the original version or the Christmas version.

This video also took the longest time to shoot. I spent a few hours teaching Edward the Electric Slide, Macarena, Cha-Cha, Hawaiian, Swing, Waltz, and Tango. We had more costume changes here than in any of our other music videos. And this video took the longest time to edit.

This is also Edward’s directorial debut. He had lots of great ideas. We also used some of my ideas, but all the “Dancing With the Stars” and “American Idol” parodies were his ideas.

This is definitely one of my favorite Mischievious Boys music video. Edward and I had so much fun shooting the video. We are very proud to be Filipinos. Even Tommy told me that he wants to be a Filipino after watching the video.

Here are the lyrics to the song and its English translation.

PINOY AKO

Lahat tayo’y mayro’ng pagkakaiba
Sa tingin pa lang ay makikita na
Iba’t ibang kagustuhan
Ngunit isang patutunguhan

Gabay at pagmamahal ang hanap mo
Magbibigay ng halaga sa iyo
Nais mong ipakilala
Kung sino ka man talaga

Chorus:
Pinoy
Ikaw ay Pinoy
Ipakita sa mundo
Kung ano ang kaya mo

Ibang-iba ang Pinoy
Wag kang matatakot
Ipagmalaki mo
Pinoy ako, Pinoy tayo

‘Pakita mo ang tunay at kung sino ka
Mayro’n mang masama at maganda
Wala namang perpekto
Basta magpakatotoo

Gabay at pagmamahal ang hanap mo
Magbibigay ng halaga sa iyo
Nais mong ipakilala
Kung sino ka man talaga

[chorus]

Talagang ganyan ang buhay
Dapat ka nang masanay
Wala ring mangyayari
Kung laging nakikibagay

Ipakilala ang ‘yong sarili
Ano man sa ‘yo’y mangyayari
Ang lagi mong iisipin
Kayang kayang gawin

[chorus]

I AM FILIPINO

All of us are different
One look and it’s obvious
We like different things
But share similar objectives

You’re looking for guidance and love
For what will give meaning to you
You want to let people know
Who you really are

Chorus:
Pinoy
You are Pinoy
Show the world
What you can do

The Pinoy is very different
Don’t be afraid
Be proud
I am Pinoy, we are Pinoy

Show the truth and who you are
Both the good and the bad
No one’s perfect
Just be true to yourself

You’re looking for guidance and love
For what will give meaning to you
You want to let people know
Who you really are

[chorus]

That’s what life is like
Get used to it
Nothing will happen
If you always try to please

Introduce yourself
Whatever will happen to you
Always keep in mind
That you can do it

[chorus]

The MBs’ favorite divas were the big winners at this year’s Grammy Awards.

Mariah Carey won Best R&B song and Best R&B Female Vocal Performance for the smash hit “We Belong Together” from the Emancipation of Mimi, which was named Best Contemporary R&B album.

American Idol Kelly Clarkson received her first Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for the song, “Since U Been Gone.” Her album Breakaway also won Best Pop Album

Hmm… What about next year’s awards? Maybe Madonna’s “Hung Up?”
